In Our Lifetime consists of four separate phases:

  • research - information is collected
  • design - producing the images for embroidering
  • construction - the individual pieces are embroidered and put together
  • documentation - ultimately, a website is produced showing how the textile was created and sharing the memories evoked by the different images

Images for In Our Lifetime

The Mercury newspaper has given permission to use their photographs for reference, and artist Elizabeth Barsham has drawn 58 images drawn from on both published and private sources.

Embroidering the Textile

Images were transferred to individual blocks for the embroiderers. Each embroiderer received a kit containing:

  • fabric printed with a single image
  • threads in various weights in the designated colours
  • instructions and a picture depicting the finished design
  • fabric for the back to record the signature of the embroiderer

The name and residence of the embroiderer will appear on the back of the textile.
